Yoga for the 12 Steps For Women
Enhance Your Recovery - Change Your Life
~ Complete 12-step online program ~
Learn how your energetic body, mindfulness and spirit work together to enhance the 12 Steps .
ENHANCE your recovery NOW with a broader perspective - deepen your knowledge by embodying the 12 Steps through Yoga.
12-Step programs purpose a spiritual remedy, but do not offer much advice for the physical dimension of healing from any kind of addiction.
And, most of us when we first come to yoga, whether we are aware of it or not, we begin to notice that we have retreated from many aspects of ourselves, especially our bodies.
Our bodies are literally unknown to us - especially as a recovering addict, alcoholic and/or a co-dependent.
Unfortunately as we continue to struggle with our addiction and missed opportunities continue to grow...
  • Maybe we don’t play our hunches or listen to our intuition.
  • Maybe we see an opportunity, but fail to act because we’re not sure it’s what we ought to do. An opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream has appeared, but we don’t trust our good fortune.
  • A chance has come to use our talent to help someone, but we don’t know how the person will handle it, so we do nothing.
  • We rationalize.
  • We decide it’s a frivolous impulse, a whim that’s not worth our attention.
But this struggle does not need to continue... An opportunity exists that will allow you to say YES! to your life?
For me personally, it was a series of AH-HAH moments strung together over time… Seeds were being planted along the way.

Alcohol stopped working for me. Once I could drink anyone “under the table,” it wasn’t enough… then it was two glasses of wine and I was drunk and getting lost on the Metro going home.

My life was a continuation of the same situations playing over and over again, resulting in feeling stuck, unhappy, frustrated and scared.

This is when I knew … I could not “control” my drinking. And when I heard the whisper in silence. “Rixie you are an alcoholic.”

I remember thinking… WHAT!???? What did I just hear? But I listened, and my answer was, OK. I knew someone that could help me, so I called them. I said … “Hi, I don’t want to drink any more and I don’t know how to do that. Will you help me?”

This is when I discovered the Soul-ution... the answer is to surrender.
Allowing surrender is momentous...
This is where you give up all of your willpower and let the magic of recovery and the 12 Steps work in your life.
Then when you add Yoga to the Soul-lution… Freedom becomes your life.
By practicing Yoga you begin to discover subtle parts of yourself - how you are connected physically - hands, feet, hips, spine, neck, our hearts and lungs. You connect to your entire body allowing you to enhance your recovery process.
It’s the practice of embodying the 12 steps… Embodying means taking the concept of the steps & bringing them into the body with the chakras - feeling your emotions rather than just talking about them - this is the critical shift that allows lasting change!
This practice becomes YOUR Soul-ution!
It takes time, love, and support to find peace.
It took patience and acceptance to grow to the point where honesty, and integrity became my friend, and I learned that it is in the silence that we do our best listening.
  • If you continue to run from yourself and the hurtful lessons of the past you will not recover.
  • If you stand still and be quiet, the word you hear softly spoken in the inner court of your own castle, is full of beauty and loveliness.
  • If you listen, you will learn that you are not bad; that you are not a disgusting, failure-ridden person; and that you are NOT powerless.
Quite the contrary, there is much that is right and noble about you. No matter how low your self-worth, regardless of how inadequate you feel, YOU have special positive qualities too!
ENHANCE your recovery NOW with a broader perspective - deepen your knowledge by embodying (taking the concept of the steps & bringing them into the body with the chakras - feeling your emotions rather than just talking about them - this is the critical shift that allows lasting change) the 12 Steps through Yoga.
This is YOUR Soul-ution!

Yoga for the 12 Steps For Women
Enhance Your Recovery - Change Your Life

As you progress through this program, you’ll learn how your energetic body, mindfulness and spirit work together to enhance the 12 Steps.
This is your opportunity to ENHANCE your recovery NOW with a broader perspective and deepen your knowledge by embodying the 12 Steps through Yoga.
As you embark on this journey of Yoga for the 12 Steps for Women, you’ll learn:
A new and innovative way to embrace the 12 Steps.
Make the shift from the traditional 12 step process of ‘talking’ to actually embodying the 12 step process through yoga and the body.
A non-traditional way through the Body, Mind and Spirit
In Steps 1-7 we walk through the 7 energy centers of the Body moving you from an external 12 step process experience to an actual embodiment of the 12 steps. In Steps 8-10 we tap into Mindfulness and restore and reflect. In Steps 11 and 12 we tap into Spirit where we round out the process by focusing on forgiveness both for ourselves and others.
Attending meetings and THIS program work well together!
Supportive community and THIS program - PERFECTION!
Internal peace paired with a supportive external community is what enhances your recovery.
Both Yoga and the 12 Step philosophies provide a framework to live a more authentic life and foster personal growth and healing.
By weaving yoga throughout these 12 steps we connect the body, mind and spirit addressing the whole person.
To practice yoga in recovery is an accelerator for your recovery and life.
Each week we pair one step with one aspect of yoga practice, including:

Steps 1-7  We step deeply into our bodies through the energy centers of the Chakras – We recover.
Mindfulness

(Pause, Breathe, Relax and Feel)
Steps 8, 9 and 10 – Integrating the Body and the Mind

Spirit
Consciousness - Service
SPIRIT
Two approaches to Spirit (Consciousness and Service)
Steps 11 and 12

WHAT's included...
Week 1 ~ Step 1 Chakra 1
An example is the work we do with the first step and how it relates to grounding and feeling safe. When we admit that “we are powerless over the effects of addiction,” we turn to the concept of “sangha,” or community, and find like-minded souls who gather to support each other. We practice tree pose and imagine ourselves in a circle, where uplifted hands connect and support the swaying and deeply rooted tree, recognizing the support that’s available all around us.
OR:
  • Key Terms: WE, powerlessness, unmanageability, honesty
  • Chakra One – Root, Earth, Muladhara, Lam, Red
  • Grounding poses, Tree pose, feet/legs
Week 2 ~ Step 2 Chakra 2
The second chakra, located in the hips, low belly, and sacrum is related to the element water, emotions, and pleasure. It connects us to others through feeling, desire, sensation, and movement. Ideally this chakra and Step 2 brings us fluidity and grace, depth of feeling, and the ability to accept change.
  • Key Terms: Belief, We are awakening, Faith = Change, Hope
  • Chakra Two – Sacral, Water, Swadisthana, Vam, Orange
  • On the Mat - Flow, Yin, Flexibility, Fluidity in the poses

Week 3 ~ Step 3 Chakra 3
This chakra is known as our inner sun, the fire chakra that sparks energy and personal power and requires the wisdom of a spiritual warrior, confidence, self-honor and the endurance to put our lives into action. It governs our self-esteem, self-responsibility and self-discipline and is located in the solar plexus. Connecting with this inner source - connects us to our higher source.

  • Key Terms: Action, Surrender, Decision, and Faith
  • Chakra Three – Solar Plexus, Fire, Manipura, Ram, Yellow
  • On the Mat - Inner-strength, Core, Warrior Poses
Week 4 ~ Step 4 Chakra 4
We use our Heart Chakra to write our Fourth Step inventory. It is here we stay grounded, (Chakra 1) tap into our emotions (Chakra 2) feel the courage (Chakra 3) to look into our past with compassion for others and ourselves. To Thine own heart be true.
  • Key Terms: Searching, Fearless, Honest, Compassion, Courage
  • Chakra Four – Heart, Air, Anahata, Yam, Green
  • On the Mat - Heart opening, upper body strength and flexibility

Week 5 ~ Step 5 Chakra 5
It is here in Step Five we speak the Truth about ourselves with another. We tell our whole truth probably for the first time. With this action, through our throat chakra, we begin to trust and honor our voice, speak our truth, and learn to express our emotions in a healthy way. We use mantra and chanting to open our throat Chakra.
  • Key Terms: Speak, Truth, Trust, Honor, Integrity
  • Chakra Five – Throat, communication, Self-expression, and Sound
  • On the Mat - Releasing the neck, jaw, mantra.
Week 6 ~ Step 6 Chakra 6
In Step Six we become entirely ready to “see” and have God remove patterns and behaviors that no longer serve us. Here we gain insight and perception and self-awareness. Here we begin to elevate and shift our awareness towards mindfulness.
  • Key Terms: Insight, Perception, Awareness, and Willingness
  • Chakra Six – Brow, Intuition, Self-reflection, Light
  • On the Mat - Opening our Third Eye center with eye exercises and visioning with our eyes closed.
Week 7 ~ Step 7 Chakra 7
In Step Seven, we connect to our higher power and ask prayerfully and humbly to remove what is no longer working for us. When we do this, it will bring us knowledge, wisdom, understanding, spiritual connection, and bliss. Hallelujah.
  • Key Terms: Humility, Prayer
  • Chakra 7 - Connection, Awareness, Self-knowledge
  • On the Mat - Practice of calming forward bends leading to the surrender and humility of Pyramid Pose
Week 8 ~ Step 8 Mindfulness The Pause
In Step 8 we use mindfulness – we literally take a pause and mindfully begin to prepare a list of all persons we have harmed. In this pause, we also become willing to make amends to them all. It is a mindful pause of self-reflection. We place ourselves at the top of the list. We open our hearts and become willing and ready to forgive and to live in a healthy relationship with others and more importantly with ourselves.
  • Key Terms: Pause. Willingness. Self-Forgiveness
  • Mindfulness: We take time to journal. We make a list, not to feel guilty, but to facilitate healing. We allow ourselves to change our attitude – this is where the healing begins – within us. It opens the door to love.
  • On the Mat - Restore, Refresh, Renew - we rest.
Week 9 ~ Step 9 Patience & Discernment
In Step Nine we complete the forgiveness process that began in Step Four and fulfills our requirement to reconcile with others. We clear our garden of the dead leaves – we rake up and discard the old habits that are troublesome to us.
  • Key Terms: Patience. Respect. Discernment. Forgiveness. Truth.
  • Mindfulness: We seek wise counsel, pray and meditate for discernment to consider the appropriateness of facing these people.
  • On the Mat: A breath practice and moving toward Warrior III.
Week 10 ~ Step 10
Step Ten is a personal inventory much like the moral inventory of Step Four. The difference is the ongoing and frequent nature of it. The idea of “personal” is a reminder to us that the inventory is about us – not others.
  • Key Terms: Ahimsa, Clarity, and Awareness
  • Mindfulness: Quality, mindful time everyday can be set aside for a daily inventory perhaps a few minutes before bed or early in the morning when our minds are clear.
  • On the Mat - We consider AHIMSA (non-harming) in this practice – one of the precepts of Yoga.

WEEK 11 ~ STEP 11
In Step Eleven we draw nearer to our Higher Power in prayer and meditation. We draw closer to our source of power, serenity, guidance and healing. We grow closer to ourselves. We work this step through the routine practice of prayer and meditation. Through prayer we talk to God. Through meditation we listen to God.
  • Key Terms: Consciousness, Meditation, Prayer, and Connection
  • On the Mat - this practice includes a long centering and breathing practice, followed by a gentle, slow flow class with mindful breathing - to prepare for a guided meditation or a meditation of practicing stillness.
WEEK 12 ~ STEP 12
In Step 12 our spiritual awakening continues to unfold. The help I have received I shall pass on and give to others. Remembering that recovery is an experience of mutuality. We constantly are giving and receiving.

We become empowered by empowering others, and the way we do this is by sharing our experience, strength and hope. This doesn’t mean we “fix” others, give them advice, or do anything for them they cannot do for themselves. It simply means we describe how our recovery has been for us.
  • Key Terms: Awakening, Service, Empower
  • On the Mat - The practice for Step 12 is a review of all the poses practiced over the 12 Step Journey ending with a Loving Kindness meditation.
As we all know, modern life offers many forms of addiction – food, consumerism, cell phones, Facebook – and we’ve all got some version of a default place we go to numb out or disconnect.

By practicing Yoga on a regular, consistent basis, we will begin to develop awareness, balance and connect our physical bodies to our mental, emotional and spiritual selves.
Both Yoga and the 12 Step philosophies provide a framework to live a more authentic life and foster personal growth and healing.

I have designed this program from decades of experience in both Yoga and and the 12 Steps! I know you will appreciate the Body, Mind, Spirit approach!

In Yoga for the 12 Steps we will embody the Whole of ourselves - Body, Mind, Emotions and Spirit.
A Christmas Morning ...

I reached out to Rixie because I knew I needed help and saw that she offered a program that intrigued me. I didn’t feel comfortable in 12 Step meetings. I needed a more intimate connection – one on one.

She offered one-on-one Recovery Coaching through her Yoga for the 12 Steps program. I live in California so we used FaceTime each week.

I have grown so much since working with her, my fear, anxiety and hopelessness is gone and I have learned coping skills and the true meaning of trust having Rixie as my coach. After completing her Yoga for the 12 Steps program, we began the next step in my personal growth - the Personal Foundation program. It has 12 steps too! Digging in to areas like tolerations, boundaries, simplifying my life, and taking care of my body!

I was getting ready for my meeting with her this morning and I was overcome with such a positive exuberant feeling, something I had not felt in a long time! The feeling I had at that moment was like Christmas morning! I could hardly wait to see Rixie's face and find out what gift I was going to realize and unwrap today! I felt like a child again and the euphoria I felt filled me with such happiness that it brought tears to my eyes.

Rixie Dennison is a Christmas morning gift and I am so blessed to have this wonderful, caring, warm, generous wise woman in my life.

I highly recommend Rixie's programs, classes and amazing retreats. She has brought me to the other side of my addictions and helped me regain my self-worth and quality of life. She has a lot to give and share, drawing on her own experiences with addictions and life’s journeys. Don't hesitate to call for help, and then you too can have your Christmas morning with Rixie and think, "what gift will I open today?”

Hi, my name is Rixie Dennison.
I began teaching classes at Sun and Moon Yoga Studio, and more specifically, Yoga for the 12 Steps, on Friday evenings in 2012. I felt there was a need in the community to reach out and demonstrate that recovery was available in the form of Yoga AND the 12 Steps. It sure helped me! It was in these classes each week that I began to integrate Yoga and Meditation with a Step (from the 12 Steps) each week. What surprised me was that people that were NOT even in recovery began to attend! They loved the 12 Steps - as a way of life and as the classes continued, people began to recover. I have also led a weekend retreat (Yoga for the 12 Steps) that turned out to be an amazing weekend for all who attended.
I have also helped individuals on a one-to-one basis… This is the story of a woman in California who did not want to attend 12 Step meetings. She contacted me about my program Yoga for the 12 Steps. She was addicted to opioids. She asked me… “Can you help me?” I was scared. I had never worked with anyone addicted to opioids AND she was reaching out to me. She found a doctor to prescribe Suboxone. I met with her every week on FaceTime and literally watched her detox off the drugs. She did it. And then, eventually quit smoking and weaned herself off of the Suboxone. She is drug free now and has been for 3 years. She had such a willingness to recover - it was such an honor to be a part of her journey.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Are you questioning your drinking?

Today is the day to stop wondering - let’s take a good, hard look. We are powerless over (insert what you feel powerless over here). In the first step we see how we have exhausted all the nonproductive, ineffective ways to deal with our situation. Powerlessness here means we’re giving up on willpower, force, and intellectualizing because they just didn’t work.

When we admit we are powerless, we are saying that we are through trying to do it on our own—finished with attempts at recovery that are centered around our own strength or cunning. To lay down our old failed powers is not much different, after all, from laying down a broken old bike with two flat tires. It was better than nothing, but now we have a new means of moving on our way. Willingness is the key.

Why am I stuck, nothing is going “right” for me and why is my life so crappy?

Let’s try something new - some forward movement. Most of us don’t like change very much. Getting sober is like stepping into a rushing river of change that will take us to new places in our lives. We sense that. We learn to trust it more each day. But even though life keeps getting better for us, we still keep some of that fear inside us about what will happen if we keep working our recovery program and life keeps changing for us? We take forward movement each day and trust.

I just don’t get these 12 Steps can you help me?

Absolutely! Let me help you take a look at them in another way.

I’ve been sober for a while… Why do I need this?

This program will ENHANCE your recovery - broader perspective - deepen your knowledge.

Do the 12 steps have to be my whole world?

No. The 12 Steps create a foundation for your life.

These 12 steps take up so much time!

Let me take you through them so that you embody them. Really get them!

I’ve heard that the 12 steps are the ONLY solution?

They are a solution for many - my program looks at them in a different way - through the Body, Mindfulness and Spirit

I’ll just do it on my own?

It’s been proven that good emotional sobriety is done with others.

What if I’m not a ‘meeting person’?

This program with me does not require attending meetings.

How is this different from the traditional 12 steps?

The difference is we take a look at the 12 Steps in a non-traditional way through the Body, Mind and Spirit.

What does ‘taking care of your body’ have to do with the 12 steps of sobriety?
The 12 STeps do not address our bodies … and, we have been abusing our bodies for years and years. It’s time to address our physical body in a gentle way with Yoga.

How will yoga help me with the 12 steps?

Yoga will help you “tune” into your body. Have you ever heard, ”your issues are in your tissues?

This feels woo-woo to me?

If is for sure a little different … non-traditional … and it works.

What if I have no experience with Yoga?

Yoga? That’s OK - I like to call it mindful movement.

Is this Yoga for Beginners?

Absolutely - all levels embraced.

Join us as you develop awareness, balance and connect your physical body to your mental, emotional and spiritual self.

I have designed this program from decades of experience in both Yoga and and the 12 Steps!

I know you will appreciate the Body, Mind, Spirit approach!
